Surprisingly, the Guinness World Record holders don't get paid anything as prize money. Yes, you read that absolutely right. Upon creating or breaking a record, there is zero prize money involved.

The Guinness World Records official website confirms the same: “As the world's unrivalled authority on record-breaking achievement, our role is to celebrate the world’s best, to inspire ordinary people and to entertain and inform. For these reasons, we do not pay record-breakers for their achievements or for carrying out a record title attempt. We are also unable to cover any expenses, offer sponsorship or provide equipment for anyone attempting a record.”¹

Moreover, Guinness World Records also does not make any contributions to individuals, businesses or charities, in order to maintain its unbiased stance as the world's global record-breaking authority and to ensure that they are truly inclusive of all applicants.

What Do The Record Breakers Ultimately Get?

If not handsome prize money, then what do the Guinness World Record holders get? Well, the record holder gets an official complimentary record holder certificate, which confirms the record holder’s status and details of the record held. But don’t forget the hard-earned recognition and popularity that record holders get.

Fees You Need To Pay To Apply For A Record Attempt

As an individual who wishes to attempt to break a Guinness World Record, the standard application fees (non-refundable) would be £5/$5 (+VAT). Even the expenses associated with the record attempt need to be borne by the applicant. 

Who Approves The Guinness World Record Title?

Guinness World Records appoints an expert trained ‘records management team’ that conducts research and verification checks to confirm whether a new record title has been achieved or not.

List Of Some Guinness World Records Held By India

1. Largest Human Currency Symbol

Not many of you might know that India holds the Guinness World Record for the largest human currency symbol. The largest human currency symbol was created of the Indian Rupee, by the Rotaract club of A.C.Tech-Anna University & Nam Bharatha Sevai (NBS) (both India), in Tamil Nadu, on 11 March 2018. A total of 1717 participants had come together to create the world’s largest human currency symbol².

2. Smallesh Washing Machine

As recently as last year, Sebin Saji of Kanjirapally, Kerala, achieved a Guinness World Record of creating the world’s smallest washing machine on 19 April 2024³.

In a showcase of his engineering skills, he created the smallest washing machine, having dimensions of 32.5 x 33.6 x 38.7 mm (1.28 in x 1.32 in x 1.52 in).

3. Tallest Statue

The Guinness World Record for the world’s tallest statue is held by the Statue of Unity (Gujarat). The statue measures 182 m (597 ft 1 in) and was consecrated on 31 October 2018⁴. This Statue of Unity is of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950).
