    You can apply for TIN online at your state's commercial tax department website. After you find the online application form, complete all the details and submit the required documents digitally.     How To Know The TIN Application Status?

    After submission of the TIN application, the applicant can track the status of the application online. To check the status you need to follow the below steps:

    1. Go to the official website of NSDL 
    2. Select the type of application.
    3. Enter the acknowledgement number. It is a 15-digit number provided to the applicant within 3 days of the application.
    4. Click on ‘Verify Status of Application’.

    Format Of TIN Number

    The TIN number usually has 11 characters. The government provides the first 9 characters, and the last 2 characters indicate the applicant's state. It functions as a special code for tax-related matters.

    Is A TIN The Same As A Tax ID

    No, a Taxpayer Identification Number and a Tax ID are different. A Tax ID, or TAN, is a ten-digit code for entities collecting and deducting taxes. Meanwhile, TIN is an eleven-digit number for businesses and companies subject to VAT. They serve different purposes in tax administration.

    While both TIN and Tax ID are important for tax compliance, it's essential to understand the nuances between them. Additionally, it is worth noting the difference between GSTIN and TIN. GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is a unique 15-digit code assigned to registered businesses under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. It tracks transactions related to the supply of goods and services across states. In contrast, TIN primarily pertains to Value Added Tax (VAT) and identifies businesses subject to VAT regulations.
