Every investor and trader in India should be aware of the trading holidays for NSE (National Stock Exchange) and BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange). Holidays impact the settlement of trades, SIP processing, and even corporate actions like dividends and buybacks.

    Key Takeaways

    Key Takeaways

    • The Indian stock market (NSE & BSE) observes 14 official holidays in 2025, affecting trading and settlement activities.
    • Diwali (October 21, 2025) will be a trading holiday, but special Muhurat Trading will be held that day.
    • Commodity and currency markets follow similar holiday schedules but may differ in evening sessions and religious observances.
    • If a holiday falls on a settlement day, fund transfers, SIPs, redemptions, and corporate actions get postponed to the next business day.
    • Markets remain closed on weekends; SIPs due on holidays are processed on the next working day with adjusted NAVs.

Here is your comprehensive guide for 2025.

Note:  November 08, 2026, will be observed as a trading holiday on account of Diwali Laxmi Pujan. However, Muhurat Trading, a special session held during Diwali, will still take place on that day. The timings for the Muhurat Trading session will be announced separately through an official circular.

Trading in the equity segment takes place on all weekdays, except Saturdays, Sundays, and exchange-declared holidays. The Indian stock market follows a fixed schedule, divided into multiple sessions throughout the day.

    Pre-Open Session (09:00 AM – 09:08 AM)

The pre-open session allows investors to place, modify, or cancel orders before regular trading begins. Order entry starts at 9:00 AM and closes at 9:08 AM, with the final one minute closing at a random time. Once the pre-open window ends, order matching begins automatically.

Regular Trading Session (09:15 AM – 03:30 PM)

This is the main trading window when most buying and selling happens. The Normal and Limited Physical Market opens at 9:15 AM and closes at 3:30 PM.

    Closing Session (03:40 PM – 04:00 PM)

The closing session is conducted between 3:40 PM and 4:00 PM. Prices during this session are used to determine the official closing price of securities for the trading day.

    Block Deal Session Timings

Block deals are executed in separate windows to ensure transparency and minimal market impact:

    • Morning Block Deal Window: 08:45 AM to 09:00 AM
    • Afternoon Block Deal Window: 02:05 PM to 02:20 PM

    Corporate Bonds Market

Corporate bond market holidays generally align with national holidays observed by the RBI and stock exchanges. However, trading and settlement may also be affected on select additional days based on exchange and depository notifications.

What are Muhurat Trading and Special Trading Sessions?

    • Muhurat Trading: A special, symbolic one-hour session during Diwali Laxmi Pujan, considered auspicious for starting new investments.
    • Special Sessions/Extended Sessions: Exchanges may declare special/extraordinary trading windows (such as during budget announcements, or technical rollover sessions).

On occasions such as Diwali (Muhurat Trading) or before major festivals, the exchanges may operate for reduced hours, often only for an hour in the evening or close early. Exchanges announce such timings at least a week in advance.

How After Market Order on Grip Helps You?

After Market Order (AMO) is a powerful feature available on Grip Invest that allows you to place buy or sell orders outside of regular stock market hours. This is especially useful during trading holidays or when your busy schedule overlaps with market timings.

    1. Trade During Holidays or Off-Hours
Markets closed? No problem. Place AMO trades on holidays, weekends, or after-hours, and they’ll be queued for execution when the market opens.

    2. Perfect for Working Professionals
Can’t track the market between 9:15 AM and 3:30 PM? AMO lets you plan and place trades at your convenience, late night, early morning, or while commuting.

    3. Never Miss a Market Opportunity
Whether it’s reacting to news, executing SIPs, or hitting target prices, AMO ensures your investment strategy stays on track, no matter the time.

    4. Multi-Segment Access
Use AMO across equity, bond, commodity, and currency segments, making portfolio management seamless and efficient.

What Happens If A Holiday Falls On A Settlement Day?

Trading holidays may coincide with settlement or payout days, which can cause several effects:

How Settlement Delays Affect Fund Transfers and Payouts

    1. Fund settlements are postponed to the next working day if a holiday falls on payout/settlement.
    2. Payouts and credits for shares and funds will reflect after the holiday.
    3. Fund withdrawals from brokers may see similar delays.

Impact on SIPs, Redemptions, and Corporate Actions

    1. SIP investments scheduled on a holiday are typically processed on the next business day.
    2. Redemptions (mutual fund withdrawals) are credited based on the NAV of the next working day.
    3. Corporate actions like dividends, share splits, and buybacks may be processed after the next working day.

    Conclusion

Understanding the Indian stock market and commodity/currency market holiday calendar is essential for seamless investing, timely fund transfers, and successful portfolio management in 2025. Mark your calendars and plan your investments to avoid last-minute hassles caused by exchange holidays.
